Sandro Tonali spoke to the Newcastle United press pack following last night’s win over Athletic Bilbao.

Sandro Tonali has admitted “you need to think about everything” when asked whether he will stay at Newcastle United.

In telling comments following Newcastle’s win over Athletic Bilbao, the Italian also downplayed news about his recent contract extension. The Daily Mail reported last month that Tonali penned a “secret” deal - tying him down at St James’ Park until 2029 - during his 10-month gambling ban.

Newcastle fans rejoiced at the news given Tonali - who scooped the man of the match award - is now the club’s prized asset following Alexander Isak’s exit. It places the Magpies in a position of strength should any potential suitor come calling.

Sandro Tonali downplays contract extension

However, Tonali appeared to dismiss the contract news while speaking to reporters last night. He was clear to highlight feeling surprised at his deal being placed under scrutiny a fortnight ago.

“This extension was three years ago after the ban,” Tonali told a media huddle. “I don't know why everybody spoke about this. I signed after the ban for another year. And I'm happy, not just for one more year here, but I'm happy for the people, for the fans, for every player, every member of the staff here in Newcastle. Every day I work to win every game. I work for every person in Newcastle.”

Sandro Tonali gives unconvincing answer

Tonali also gave an unconvincing answer when asked if he views his long-term future at Newcastle. Despite being unprompted, the 25-year-old also mentioned former teammate Isak.

“This is a tough question because in football you need to think year on year,” Tonali added. “I don’t want to say I want to stay here 10 years and in two years, three years, four years, five years I will go. I want to think, just for me, year on year. This is football. Last summer was tough for us, for Alex (Isak), but this is football.

“If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything. I don’t want to say, ‘Yes, I want to stay here for 10 years’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”
