Former Liverpool man shows interest in Southampton manager job

Southampton are looking for a new manager after parting ways with Will Still earlier this month.

The managerial merry-go-round continues to spin at Southampton.

Fresh questions surround the club’s direction after they parted ways with manager Will Still following just five months in charge.

Still’s dismissal was confirmed on Sunday evening, mere hours after Southampton suffered a demoralizing 2-0 home defeat to Preston North End—their third consecutive loss and a result that left the south coast side languishing in 21st position in the Championship table.

The 33-year-old Belgian-born manager departs having secured a dismal record of just four wins from 16 matches across all competitions, with only two victories coming in the league

Appointed in May on a three-year contract after impressing with French side Lens, where he guided them to an eighth-place finish in Ligue 1, Still arrived with considerable promise and a reputation as an innovative tactician.

However, it just hasn’t worked out for him at St Mary’s stadium.

Alongside Still’s departure, Southampton confirmed that his entire coaching staff have also left their positions at the club. Tonda Eckert, head coach of the men’s Under-21s, has been appointed interim manager and will take charge in the meantime.

The Saints however are still looking for a permanent manager, and Sky Sports have now reported that Adam Lallana is open to the role.

The former Liverpool man has been a first-team coach for the Saints since retiring at the end of last season.

He was a player coach for the side before confirming his retirement.

However, Sky Sports have revealed that the Saints are not considering Lallana due to his relative lack of experience:

“Southampton are undergoing a thorough process to identify their next permanent head coach – led by sporting director Johannes Spors – but are not in a rush to make an appointment. ”

“Saints’ U21s head coach Tonda Eckert is taking charge of the team on a temporary basis, and the club are looking to give him their full support in the interim period, hoping a positive upturn in results gives them time to make the right decision.”

“Eckert is being supported by former Saints player Adam Lallana, who would be interested in becoming a head coach but is deemed an unlikely option at this time, given his lack of experience in the role.”

Adam Lallana first stepped into a player-coach position under interim boss Simon Rusk in April 2025, supporting the first team for the final games Premier League fixtures of last season.
