The Athletic reveal Liverpool star in‘preliminary discussions’ over new contract

The Athletic have reported that one important Liverpool star is in “preliminary discussions” over a new deal.

Liverpool’s squad planning continues to evolve as the Reds navigate several behind-the-scenes discussions regarding the futures of key personnel at the club.

With the season hitting its stride and European commitments intensifying, contract matters have moved to the fore at Anfield as the club seeks to secure their most influential performers.

Ryan Gravenberch has already been linked to a new contract, although he has kept his cards close to his chest when quizzed over the reports.

Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson are among those facing decisions about their Liverpool futures, with both seeing their contracts in the summer

While much of the recent spotlight has been on deals set to expire next summer, Liverpool’s ownership is also taking proactive steps.

Indeed, the Athletic are reporting that the Anfield club have engaged in preliminary talks over a new deal for Dominik Szoboszlai:

“Few doubt Szoboszlai will allow himself to be distracted, even if his performances have inevitably led to queries over if, and when, the champions will try to extend a contract which expires in June 2028,” reporter Gregg Evans wrote.

“Preliminary discussions are taking place with Liverpool over a possible new deal for Szoboszlai, although club sources are downplaying that any agreement is imminent.”

“His fellow midfielder Ryan Gravenberch is also out of contract in 2028 and has his own strong case for improved terms given his excellent form.”

It would be fair to say that the Hungarian has been the club’s best player this term.

As Arne Slot’s side navigate a challenging campaign, the Hungarian midfielder continues to deliver consistently at both ends of the pitch, underpinning the Reds’ recent upturn in fortunes.

Virgil van Dijk has already hailed his impact so far and hopes he can turn into the player “we all feel he could be”:

“Dom is very important. The energy he brings on the pitch is incredible. The quality that he has is outstanding. He’s learning in each and every game. He’s developing into the player that we all feel like he could be, and he’s showing it for his country as well.”

“He just needs to keep doing it for the rest of the season. So far he’s had a great start to the season. Now he just needs to keep going, keep his head down and keep performing well.”
