Patriots’ offensive line struggles only making Will Campbell shine brighter

Last season, the New England Patriots' offensive line was among the worst in football. Vederian Lowe and Demontrey Jacobs were pathetic excuses for tackles, while midseason acquisition Ben Brown finished the year as their second-best player on the line. Left guard Michael Jordan outplayed rookie fourth-rounder Layden Robinson, and both ended up being cut.

To no surprise, upgrading the line was something the Patriots desperately needed to do via free agency and the draft.

The Patriots made significant changes to their offensive line this offseason, and none were more key than their drafting of Will Campbell at No. 4 overall. The rookie left tackle has had more ups than downs through nine weeks and is looking to be one of the better first-round offensive linemen in this year's draft.

He ranks second among all rookie tackles according to PFF, only behind No. 7 draft pick Armand Membou. He comes in as the 27th overall tackle.

Adding Campbell on the left side helped things on paper, but the line as a unit hasn't looked all that great. Morgan Moses is a significant upgrade over Jacobs at tight tackle, and Mike Onwenu has a sound PFF grade, but rookie guard Jared Wilson has really struggled, allowing the second-most sacks at the position. Garrett Bradbury has been clean as a center.

Will Campbell continues to be one of the best players on the Patriots offensive line

Campbell looked elite to start the year, allowing a single sack in the first six games. He's allowed four sacks over his last 110 snaps, a less-than-elite figure, but he's also played against superior competition.

Two of those sacks came from Myles Garrett, while the Titans and Falcons each notched one against the LSU product. Despite allowing a sack against Atlanta, he was still the team's best pass blocker.

For a pass rush that features two rookie first-round picks in Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr., both of whom Campbell faced off against in the SEC, those aren't bad numbers. He also delayed an Atlanta touchdown by chasing down Pearce after Drake Maye was stripped at the end of the first half —a great hustle play.

Allowing only three pressures is also impressive for a rookie, and a 95% pass block efficiency rate is excellent.

The Patriots are near the top of the league in sacks allowed, but that shouldn't stop fans from being excited about Will Campbell. The rookie is having a very solid start to his career, and here's to hoping he can be Maye's blindside protector for the next decade or more.
