Dominik Szoboszlai has proved himself invaluable to Liverpool this season and the club have begun preliminary talks over a new long-term contract for their No. 8.
Szoboszlai’s influence on Liverpool has been unparalleled this season, and even during the miserable run of six defeats in seven games he stood out as one of the few consistent performers.
It should come as no surprise, then, that The Athletic‘s Gregg Evans reports the commencement of talks over a new contract for the 25-year-old.
Those conversations are described as preliminary and a breakthrough is not viewed as imminent, but given his current deal runs to 2028 it highlights Liverpool’s desire to tie Szoboszlai down for the long term.
Evans’ update comes following a claim from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano that the Premier League champions were set to open talks with both Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch.

Both are players deemed essential to Arne Slot‘s setup and will remain key cogs for many years to come – and Liverpool will be eager to avoid any interest from other clubs across Europe and beyond.
No Liverpool player has clocked more minutes on the pitch this season than Szoboszlai, who has played every minute of his 15 appearances so far.
The Hungary captain has scored twice and assisted five goals, with Mohamed Salah the only player with more direct goal involvements (eight).
Who else Liverpool are likely to hold contract talks with

Like Szoboszlai and Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister‘s terms also expire in 2028 and it is logical that negotiations will take place over an extension to his deal in the near future.
Liverpool are also facing more pressing matters when it comes to Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson, who are into the final year of their contracts.
Konate has been in ongoing talks over an improved deal but a decision still needs to be made over whether Robertson – named vice-captain on the eve of the new campaign – will be retained.
After they put pen to paper in the summer, Salah and Virgil van Dijk are part of a group of seven first-team players whose contracts expire in 2027.
Of those, Curtis Jones is most likely to be Liverpool’s priority in discussing an extension, with it unclear what the club’s long-term plans are for Alisson, Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo and Stefan Bajcetic.
Alisson‘s deal could in fact run out at the end of the current campaign, but with an option to extend that by a further year to 2027 he is expected to stay at least for another year.
