November 6 – Belgian champions Club Brugge were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw against LaLiga giants FC Barcelona in a thrilling box-to-box encounter in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening.
The Bruges-based entity took the lead three times against their Spanish foes and almost claimed an unlikely victory in the latter stages when substitute Romeo Vermant slide in on Barça goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny before converting the loose ball – VAR awarding a foul to the visitors on review.
Even with the draw, the results ended a streak of five consecutive for Belgian sides in this season’s competition, restoring some pride for the country against a perennial powerhouse that was missing the likes of Pedri, Gavi and Raphinha.
The hosts targeted Hansi Flick’s high line in the early stages with a modicum of success. Carlos Forbs was the catalyst, creating Nicolo Tresoldi’s opener in the sixth minute before Ferran Torres equalised two minutes later.
Forbs added his first of the night on seventeen minutes with a coolly taken goal. However, a special strike from Lamine Yamal on the hour mark, after combining with Fermin Lopez, brought parity once more.
Brugge’s Forbs then added his second of the evening with a dinked effort as the Belgian side looked to claim one of the biggest scalps in the competition.
Brugge then had a penalty chalked off after a pitch-side review before Barcelona leveled after Christos Tzolis’s header from a Yamal cross beat his own goalkeeper.
“We had a lot of absentees and we struggled in midfield,” said Barcelona manager Hansi Flick. “We didn’t press the ball and didn’t win our duels. That made it difficult for our defenders. Club kept getting out easily with one touch.”
At the end of November, Brugge, ranked 22nd in the table, travel to Sporting Lisbon while FC Barcelona, eleventh in the table, face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
