Wolves are in the hunt for a new manager to replace Vitor Pereira and the Premier League side are weighing up their options

They are inside the relegation zone along with West Ham and Nottingham Forest after their first 10 fixtures. Eight points separate them from Burnley in 17th place. Next up is an away trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend to play Chelsea as they aim to turn their fortunes around.

Wolves managerial update amid Bruno Lage links

According to Record, Bruno Lage has emerged as a candidate for the Wolves job. The 49-year-old was in charge at Molineux from 2021 to 2022 and has most recently worked at Benfica. He was sacked by the Portuguese giants in September and was replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Lage, who is from Setubal in Portugal, started his coaching career with Benfica’s B team back in 2018. He then worked his way up to becoming their first-team’s manager shortly after. The head coach won 67.11% of games during his first spell at Estadio da Luz.

Wolves then came calling and he was picked as Nuno Espirito Santo’s replacement. They finished in a respectable 10th place during his only full campaign at the helm. His team in that first year were built on solid foundations and were comfortable defensively but they struggled for goals.

Lage was sacked in October 2022 after a poor start to his second term. He subsequently moved over to Brazil to manage Botafogo before returning to his native country. Benfica re-appointed him in September last year on an 18-month contract Taça da Liga trophy earlier this year after they beat Sporting Lisbon in the final on penalties.

What now for Wolves after Vitor Pereira exit?

Lage knows Wolves already and could be seen by the hierarchy as someone to step into Pereira’s shoes. He understands the club and the fans so it wouldn’t take long for him to settle in. It remains to be seen how bringing him back would go down with supporters though, especially based off the fact he was given the chop three years ago.

Wolves were beaten 3-0 away at Fulham last time out and their defeat at Craven Cottage proved to be the final straw for Pereira. Defender Emmanuel Agbadou was sent off against the Whites down in London as well. Their upcoming opponents Chelsea are sat in 7th and are only a point off the top four.

Enzo Maresca’s men drew 2-2 away at Qarabag in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. Estevao and Alejandro Garnacho got their goals. They beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 last Saturday night.
