Pistons not expecting veteran forward to miss much time with injury

DETROIT — Veteran forward Tobias Harris continues to deal with a right ankle injury first suffered during the Detroit Pistons’ game against the Dallas Mavericks in Mexico City on Saturday.

Harris, 33, is set to miss his second straight game Wednesday night at home against the Utah Jazz after sitting out Monday’s game on the road vs. the Memphis Grizzlies.

But the Pistons aren’t concerned about his longterm availability for the squad.

“He’s getting better,” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said before Wednesday’s game. “It’s just the ankle and one of those things that it’s, ‘How is it today?’ You do more, you see how it responds tomorrow.

“Tobias has been, throughout his career, one of the more durable and reliable players who don’t miss a ton of time. We don’t expect it, but again, we’ll always do what’s right by him to make sure he’s healthy.”

Harris is about as durable as they come with 70-plus games played in nine of the last 10 seasons.

In place of Harris, the Pistons have been relying on big man Isaiah Stewart at the second forward spot. He’s been taking on a greater offensive role this season and showcased with a career-high 26 points against the Grizzlies, while continuing his stellar defensive play with four blocks.

Harris has kicked off his 15th NBA season posting 13.5 points, six rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, while shooting 39.4% from the field.

Guards Marcus Sasser (hip) and Jaden Ivey (knee) also remain out. Neither has made their season debut for the Pistons, yet.
