Giannis Antetokounmpo’s playfully asks if he can suit up for college team

After falling to the Toronto Raptors, the Milwaukee Bucks have a few days off before returning to action on Friday. Giannis Antetokounmpo, however, seemed restless. On Wednesday night, he took to social media, jokingly asking if he could suit up for the Marquette Golden Eagles in their matchup against the Southern Jaguars.

“Random thoughts as I sit in my living room…do I have college eligibility??? Can I suit up for Marquette tonight? 🤔💭,” the Greek Freak wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The Bucks are back home in Cream City after wrapping up a two-game road stretch that included a victory over the Indiana Pacers and a loss to the Toronto Raptors. That short break gives Giannis Antetokounmpo a chance to recharge before Friday’s clash with the red-hot Chicago Bulls at Fiserv Forum, the same court where the Marquette Golden Eagles will take on Southern.

Now, picture a Marquette lineup that includes Sean Jones, Chase Ross, Zaide Lowery, Ben Gold, and Giannis Antetokounmpo suiting up together.

There’s nothing wrong with imagining it, but the reality is that Giannis Antetokounmpo cannot suit up for any college team, even though he never played in the NCAA.

Giannis Antetokounmpo in the NCAA?

If that were to happen though, Marquette head coach Shaka Smart’s job would instantly become much simpler. In a purely hypothetical world where the future Hall of Famer put on Golden Eagles colors, the team might not even need much coaching to dominate. Antetokounmpo alone could put the rest of college basketball on notice.

Marquette head coach Shaka Smart was asked about Antetokounmpo’s post following Marquette’s 100-82 win over Southern on November 5.

“First of all, I appreciate Giannis even thinking about Marquette,” remarked the Marquette head coach. “Second of all, if there was ever a time for our compliance folks to go to work, now’s the time.”

Even NBA teams are finding it difficult to contain Giannis Antetokounmpo this season. Through seven outings, the “Greek Freak” has posted 32.3 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game while maintaining a remarkable 70 percent effective field goal rate.

If Marquette ever needed Antetokounmpo to suit up for them, it certainly wouldn’t be for this matchup against the struggling Southern Jaguars. The Jaguars are ranked 176th nationally by KenPom, while the Golden Eagles sit comfortably at No. 47.

It may seem absurd to picture Antetokounmpo dominating Big East competition, but the NCAA has previously granted eligibility to former overseas professionals and ex-G League players. Still, that scenario will remain nothing more than a question.
