Aston Villa may be trying to tie Morgan Rogers down with a new contract, but the midfielder could still leave the club in the near future.
Over the last couple of years, Rogers has emerged as one of the most important players in the Aston Villa squad under Unai Emery.
The former Man City and Middlesbrough man has regularly been linked with a move away from Villa Park though, with the likes of Spurs and Chelsea keen to snap him up.

We revealed earlier this week that Aston Villa want to negotiate a new deal with Rogers but it might not be enough to keep him at the club for the long-term.

When Morgan Rogers could leave Aston Villa
Discussing the matter on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano corroborated the idea that Villa are plotting contract talks that could make Rogers a top-earner at the club.
He said: “There will be movements in terms of contract because in the summer transfer window, especially at the beginning of the summer, there was interest from Chelsea, interest from Tottenham, several clubs prepared to pay big money for Morgan Rogers.
“Aston Villa decided to keep the player, described as untouchable for the whole summer transfer window. Now, Aston Villa extended the contract of Matty Cash, Aston Villa extended the contract of McGinn in the recent days, and the next one they want to extend is Morgan Rogers.”

Poll: What should Morgan Rogers do?
However, Romano is of the opinion that while Villa can resist the temptation to sell Rogers in the New Year, it may well be that he ends up moving on next summer.
He added: “To reward the player with a better salary, there is a conversation ongoing with the player and his agent. At the moment, it’s not advanced, it’s not yet at that stage like Matty Cash or McGinn signing their contract in the recent days.
“There is still need for more round of talks before saying it’s agreed, but Aston Villa are trying their best to keep their players, and so I don’t think a move in January is likely.”
Interestingly, Chelsea fans don’t want to sign Rogers, but we know Spurs are very keen. Indeed, the longer these contract talks go on, the more chance Tottenham will have to swoop and lure the player away.

A January move could harm Morgan Rogers’ England hopes
Obviously, Rogers is now part of the England setup, but he will have to fight for his place ahead of the World Cup next summer.
He’s featured fairly regularly since Thomas Tuchel took over, but with Villa struggling for consistency, Rogers has to perform at the highest level week in, week out to stay in the picture.
If he were to move to Chelsea or Spurs, he would be in a bigger pond, so to speak, but that could be detrimental at the same time. With a slightly lesser role at a new club and more competition for game time, Rogers could end up spoiling his chances of being at the World Cup altogether.
You would think staying at Villa for now and being assured of regular football would be the right play for Rogers. With the likes of Phil Foden hitting fresh form, no one’s place in the England squad is guaranteed, and risks probably shouldn’t be taken.
