Former Germany international Dietmar Hamann has backed his compatriot Daniel Farke to keep Leeds United up in the Premier League this season.
Farke steered Leeds back to the top flight last term after accruing 100 points and finishing top of the Championship. Since their return, his team have battled well and have taken 11 points from their 10 games so far.
Leeds have been much more direct in their playing style this season compared to last and recruited a number of physical players in the summer window.
Speaking to FootballBlog.co.uk (h/t the Yorkshire Evening Post ), Hamann noted the subtle change in style that has led to Leeds being competitive in the Premier League so far.
“I think with the signing of [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin, he obviously knows that physicality is a big thing in the Premier League,” he said of Farke’s plan. “It obviously was in the Championship as well. He's always been very pragmatic. But I think even now, I think he's even a touch more pragmatic.
“He sees that you need to cover certain bases to get results. I really like what they do. I like that team. There’s Anton Stach who came from Hoffenheim, who's doing well. Obviously he didn't play on the weekend. I think he's a very smart manager. One of his biggest strengths is probably the way he adapts to situations.”
Leeds are currently four points clear of the relegation zone ahead of Sunday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.
The team is facing a tricky run after the November international break though with their next four matches against Aston Villa, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Eking out points from those fixtures will be challenging ahead of a busy festive period. But Hamann thinks the way Leeds are playing will benefit them and could eventually lead to the team avoiding relegation.
“This is why I will give Leeds a very good chance to stay up this season,” he said. “If they do that, Farke deserves enormous credit. Not many promoted teams stayed up in recent years.
“This year all three are doing well, you've got to say, because I thought they're the most likely to go down before the season started.
“But Burnley is doing well and Sunderland is doing exceptionally well. It will be a big achievement for any of them, including Leeds, to stay up. I think they've got a good team. I think he's got a great chance to keep them up. I think he will keep them up and I think it will be a great achievement to do so.”
