Petr Cech is a man whose opinion we respect universally, but especially when it comes to football.
The former Chelsea goalkeeper and director of football spoke exclusively to Flashscore this week, and gave them some interesting insight on what he made of this team and the Premier League title race in general.
“Surprise” Club World Cup may have cost Chelsea in this season says Cech
“For the club, it was very important to achieve some significant success after all the big changes. That came with the Club World Cup title, which was a big surprise for me personally,” Cech said of the summer which brought us into the season on a high.
“But I think it’s even more important now for Chelsea to prove themselves this season. That will be the real benchmark. They need to compete for the title, they need to win trophies. So I’m really curious to see how they’ll handle the pressure and the high expectations.”
So far… not so good. The CWC appears to have taken a major physical toll, and as well as injuries the lack of preseason has set us off to a slow start in this campaign.
Cech, who also played for Arsenal, had to admit that the Gunners “have a really huge chance this year” after getting off to a fast start while others are toiling. It’s down to us to throw them out of their stride when we face them later this month.
In other news…
Estevao Willian is closing in on a Premier League start after another impressive midweek performance for the Blues. But we don’t think this week will be it.
Joe Cole has named the player he thinks would be his first name on the Chelsea team sheet – and surprisingly it isn’t Estevao, and it isn’t even Cole Palmer.
