Exclusive: Chelsea send scouts to Champions League game instead of watching disappointing draw with Qarabag

While Chelsea battled to a 2-2 draw with Qarabag, The Chelsea Chronicle understands the club had scouts in attendance at another Champions League game on the same day.

Enzo Maresca will have been disappointed to see his side struggle against the competition minnows, and how his rotated squad failed to live up to the billing in Europe.

The Blues have not been afraid since Todd Boehly took over to spend big money on new players to bolster the squad, and the hope at this stage what they could afford to make plenty of changes and still come away from games like this with a victory.

After a transfer window where they looked to address the issues in the squad, it does look as if more additions will be required to see them become genuine competitors for the top honours.

Chelsea send scouts to watch Club Brugge vs Barcelona

This could be behind why Chelsea sent scouts to another Champions League match played on the same night, with Greame Bailey telling The Chelsea Chronicle that BlueCo had representatives in Belgium to watch Club Brugge vs Barcelona.

He said: “Chelsea were watching the Club Brugge vs Barcelona game last night, which isn’t a major surprise given how many of their targets were playing. BlueCo were at the game.”

Chelsea have been linked to a number of players on both sides which could see them address one of the biggest problems currently in the squad.

Club Brugge and Barcelona players linked to Chelsea

The centre-back role was exposed as a weakness for Chelsea in their 2-2 draw to Qarabag, and is a position where the club have players in mind playing for both clubs.

Joel Ordonez already has the seal of approval from Moises Caicedo, and started at the back for Brugge in the 3-3 thriller.

Eric Garcia and Ronald Araujo have been linked to the Blues, with the former’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Fermin Lopez was a key Chelsea target over the summer, however has started to get more minutes for Barcelona in this campaign.
