Rob Edwards has emerged as Wolves' top target as they search for their next manager following Vitor Pereira's exit.
The Portuguese left Molineux at the weekend after a dire start to the season which had left the club bottom of the Premier League and marrooned on just two points.
Gary O’Neil was initially connected with a return to the club, having been replaced by Pereira just last December but is no longer in the running.
According to The Telegraph Wolves have now turned their attention to Middlesbrough head coach Edwards, who has done an outstanding job since taking over in the summer.
They say Wolves 'are to make an official approach' to Boro at some point today - but point out Boro are reluctant to lose the 42-year-old.
Edwards played for Wolves between 2004 and 2008 and also returned there as a coach in the youth set-up and was even interim manager for two games between Walter Zenga and Paul Lambert.
He has been asked about the links on a couple of occasions, most recently on Tuesday night when he replied: "As I keep on saying, it’s my wife and my daughter that are keeping me abreast of it all, I’ve not paid any attention to it at all myself.
“I’m just concentrating on my job here at Middlesbrough. That’s absolutely my only focus, and I’m really pleased with what we’ve delivered over the last couple of days."
