Cowboys player dies at 24, days after first career touchdown: ‘A beloved teammate’

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland has died, the team announced Thursday morning. He was 24.

“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the Cowboys said in a statement on the team’s website. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

No cause of death or further details were shared.

Kneeland was in his second season with Dallas after being drafted out of Western Michigan in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. His death comes days after he scored his first career touchdown when he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone on Monday Night Football against the Arizona Cardinals.

Kneeland recorded 26 tackles, including five for a loss, one sack and one pass deflection in 18 career games with the Cowboys.

The NFL issued a statement Thursday remembering the late Kneeland.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland,” the NFL wrote in a post to X. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, family, friends and his teammates.”
