Opinion: Jorrel Hato display will give Chelsea fans flashbacks of one nightmare performance seven years ago

Jorrel Hato will not want to have a look back at his display in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Qarabag in the Champions League on Wednesday.

It was a difficult outing for Hato, who was responsible for both of the goals that Chelsea conceded at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium.

The Blues got off to a good start after Estevao Willian scored in the 16th minute. However, Hato’s errors saw Qarabag turn things around before Alejandro Garnacho salvaged a draw for Chelsea.

Ultimately, it was the kind of performance that will remind Chelsea supporters of one match seven years ago.

Jorrel Hato’s performance against Qarabag reminiscent of Tiemoue Bakayoko vs Watford

Back in 2018, Chelsea were beaten 4-1 by Watford in the Premier League, not being helped by Tiemoue Bakayoko.

To this day, many supporters believe that it is the worst individual performance ever from a Chelsea player.

Bakayoko only lasted half an hour that night after receiving two yellow cards in the first half. Before that, his passing was wayward and he was sloppy in possession in general.

The midfielder finished the game with a passing accuracy of just 67%, while he lost possession seven times.

Bakayoko still played in Chelsea’s FA Cup final that year, but he never really recovered from that performance and eventually left the club after several loan spells.

While Hato’s outing at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium was probably just as bad as Bakayoko’s at Vicarage Road, the Dutchman’s Chelsea career is not going to end the same way as his.

Jorrel Hato shouldn’t be written off

There is no denying that Hato had a tough time against Gurban Gurbanov’s side. However, he can still be a huge success at Chelsea.

Hato is still only 19. The Dutchman will get better and become more consistent. Another positive about him is that he can play in central defence and at left-back.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Ajax in the summer, Hato has already been used in both positions.

Ultimately, the Netherlands international has a lot to offer. It would be a surprise if he went down the same path as Bakayoko.
