Liverpool considering Alexander Isak-style swoop for £90k-a-week Newcastle United star

NUFC absolutely LOVE the Carabao Cup 😍

Sven Botman’s contract situation is entering precarious territory at Newcastle United.

Liverpool and Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on Sven Botman’s situation at Newcastle United.

Toon chiefs made the Dutchman one of their first blue-chip signings after the Saudi-backed takeover. The Magpies fought off interest from AC Milan to sign Botman for £32million in 2022.

He was integral to Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League the following season but, admittedly, a string of knee injuries have hampered his progress. Botman has regained his place in the starting line-up this season, starting 10 games across all competitions and forging a fruitful partnership with Malick Thiaw.

Sven Botman contract situation

However, supporters should rightfully feel nervous about Botman’s precarious contract situation. The 25-year-old will have just 12 months remaining on his current deal at the end of the season.

Should no extension be agreed, potential suitors will believe they can sign him for a cut-price fee. NewcastleWorld understands Botman’s contract is a top priority for the St James’ Park hierarchy.

New sporting director Ross Wilson is the figure tasked with managing player contracts. As well as Botman, negotiations with the likes of Tino Livramento, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are high up the agenda.

Liverpool and Chelsea interested

The Chronicle claim Liverpool and Chelsea are maintaining an arm’s length interest in Botman. Centre-back has become a problem area for both Premier League clubs in the opening stages of the season.

Liverpool failed with a deadline-day bid to sign Marc Guehi over the summer. Ironically, Botman was Alexander Isak’s closest friend at St James’ Park, and the fallout from his Toon exit is well-documented.

Botman is thought to be happy with his improved game time in recent months but his representatives are staying tight-lipped over an extension. He currently rakes in around £90,000 per week, behind top earners like Anthony Gordon and Guimaraes.

Eddie Howe on Newcastle United contracts

Eddie Howe told reporters that contract talks will be held with the newly-appointed sporting director. He said last month: “That’s one that’s waiting for Ross (Wilson). These conversations will all be led by him.

“And of course I’m sure he’s all over that and looking into the contract length of all the players and then starting conversations accordingly. We will have time for all those key decisions and meetings that we need to (have) and strategic planning for the future.

“At the moment, I think it’s important he just gets to know the staff, the players and gets an idea of how everything works. Then of course he can make changes as he sees fit to take everything forward and make it better.”
