Newcastle United’s new big-game player fires ‘wake up call’ warning to teammates - deja vu?

Newcastle United 2-0 Athletic Club: Joe Buck reaction

Newcastle United news: Dan Burn has already fired a ‘wake up call’ warning to his teammates ahead of their clash with Brentford.

The Magpies haven’t won a Premier League match away from St James’ Park since April, with that wait having ticked over beyond seven months when they kick-off at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday. Defeat at the London Stadium at the weekend was a low point of the campaign and one that Eddie Howe’s side must react to this weekend.

Of course, they managed a reaction of some sorts with victory over Athletic Club on Wednesday night, recording a 2-0 win. However, that result didn’t surprise goalscorer Dan Burn, who is making a name for himself of scoring big goals on the big occasions.

“Yeah, of course it's frustrating, because I think it's very, very easy to get up for these games and play in these Champions League nights,” Burn said ahead of that game. “Because it's what you want to play in your career and in these big games. I think these are the games where, say, Brentford on Sunday, is a game where you've really got to earn your money and turn up and perform.

“So I think that's the frustrating thing for us, that we've got lads in there that can do it and will do it, and we've got a squad that fights for each other, but we're just not putting in those performances.”

So how do Newcastle United go about changing their fortunes on the road? Exactly eleven months ago, they faced a similar quandary following a 4-2 defeat, coincidentally against Brentford in the capital.

Following that loss, the Magpies won nine-straight matches to not only shoot up the Premier League table, but also progress in both cup competitions - one they would eventually go onto win. For Burn, changing their fortunes begins with ‘honest reflection’.

“I think the gaffer has spoke about it, it's just about having honest reflection,” Burn admitted. “I think it's very easy to just look over results like that and just think, oh, it's just one of those games, but I feel like we've always been very good at being honest with each other, talk about where things are going well or places where we can improve.

“I think you know the manager and the staff now well, do absolutely everything possible to make sure that doesn't happen again, and it has, obviously at Brentford last year, and at home last year we had some bad results, every season there's been sort of that result where there's been a bit of a wake-up call, like, come on, we need to get back to what we're doing, and then we've gone on some pretty good runs.

“So it's nothing that I feel as a group we're worried about. Obviously I'd love to be sat here and win every single away game, but that isn't the case, so for us it's just about how we respond and work towards getting the win.”
