$6.6M home owned by top NBA coach engulfed by fire ‘as tall as the trees’

The $6.6 million home of a top NBA coach was heavily damaged in a massive fire, officials said.

According to ESPN, the Miami-Dade County Fire Department responded to the home of Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra around 4:36 a.m. on Thursday.

No injuries were reported and Spoelstra, who was with his team in Denver on Wednesday night, did not land in South Florida until 5:11 a.m., according to ESPN.

Photos and video on social media showed smoke rising over parts of the property as Spoelstra watched helplessly nearby.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Victoria Byrd told the Associated Press that the fire was “as tall as the trees,” adding that a privacy fence and tree cover impeded initial firefighting efforts.

According to the Associated Press, more than 20 units—both ground and air—responded to the fire, which was contained to Spoelstra’s property and did not impact any other homes.

Spoelstra, a 2-time NBA champion as a coach, has been with the Heat since the 2008-09 season. He bought the five-bedroom, six-bathroom home in December 2023, according to Realtor.com.
