Liverpool set to sanction defender exit in January window

Liverpool are reportedly willing to sanction the departure of one of their defenders in the January transfer window.

Plenty of talk has been doing the rounds on whether Liverpool need to add some defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window.

The loss of Giovanni Leoni to a season-ending ACL injury against Southampton leaves the club light on senior centre-back options and forcing uncomfortable conversations about midseason recruitment.

One player that fans have been pointing to is Calvin Ramsay.

His surprise appearance in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace last week marked something of a watershed moment—the 22-year-old’s first start for the club in nearly three years, a sobering statistic that underscores the challenges he has faced since joining from Aberdeen in 2022.

Yet that performance, delivered with composure and tactical awareness, meant that some sections of the fanbase thought he could fill in the gaps in the short-term.

However, that does not seem to be the club’s thinking.

The club’s under-21s management structure, working meticulously to nurse Ramsay back toward full fitness and competitive sharpness, have identified January as the natural juncture for another loan departure.

Now Lewis Steele, writing in his Liverpool Confidential, has revealed that Ramsay is being primed for a loan move in the winter:

“Calvin Ramsay made a surprise appearance in Liverpool’s XI in the Carabao Cup defeat by Crystal Palace last week – and it is fair to say he was the best Reds player on the pitch in the 3-0 loss,” Steele reports.

“With Jeremie Frimpong injured, some fans called for ‘Rambo’ to be on the substitutes’ bench for the first-team game against Aston Villa last Saturday. He is eligible and able to be called upon if needed.”

“But it appears Ramsay will be going out on loan in January, if he stays fit.”

“The Scotsman, who has had loans at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock since joining Liverpool, has a number of clubs keeping tabs on him for a potential move.”

“Indeed, an EFL manager has been at several Under 21s matches this season watching Ramsay, 22. Don’t rule out more minutes in the first team just yet but another loan for regular men’s football seems the most likely next step.”

Ramsay’s previous four loan moves, spanning Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock, yielded limited success.

Injuries, particularly the knee surgery that derailed his trajectory in February 2023, consistently undermined his development pathway and left him stranded on the fringes of first-team football at each destination.
