The reason Ray Davis or Ty Johnson fantasy football decision for Bills RB depth chart is simple

The Buffalo Bills put out a surprise James Cook injury update on Wednesday that he had missed practice due to injury.

Everyone who has Cook on their fantasy football team went into a quick panic. He's a star and an automatic starter at RB. What happens if he's out?

Two names popped to mind immediately, the other two backs in Buffalo, Ray Davis and Ty Johnson.

The Bills rotate all three when healthy, to some extent, and so it doesn't seem that obvious what to do.

It's actually quite simple.

Ray Davis or Ty Johnson?

------------------------

The answer, if both are available, is Ray Davis.

And the reason is Week 6 of the 2024 NFL season.

The Bills traveled to take on the New York Jets, and Cook was out.

That day, Davis got 20 carries (for 97 yards). Johnson got four runs (for 34 yards). Davis actually had all three catches by an RB, too.

Davis was also the early-down back in Week 18 once Cook sat, with Johnson just the passing-down guy.

There's very little about this season's usage that suggests that would change. Davis makes more sense as an early-down runner, while Johnson is the better receiver.

Cook may not be out anyway, but if he is, Davis seems like the better bet.
