Former NBA champ accused of drug possession

Former Memphis Grizzlies star guard Tony Allen has been accused of drug possession in Arkansas.

Allen, 43, was arrested by officers with the Poinsett County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, according to jail records. His arrest occurred around 2 p.m. local time when a car driven by William Hatton, 33, was stopped by police on Interstate 555 about 50 miles from Memphis, Tennessee, AP reports.

During the stop, officers initiated a search of the vehicle after detecting an odor of marijuana, Sheriff Kevin Molder said, according to WREG News Channel 3 in Arkansas.

Officers discovered a cigarette box with a powdery substance, later identified as cocaine, according to a PCSO report. Allen was also found to be in possession of a package of a leafy substance, which was later identified as marijuana, the report said.

Allen and Hatton were both charged with possession of meth or cocaine less than 2 grams, and possession of marijuana less than 4 grams, per WREG-3.

Allen played 14 seasons in the NBA from 2004-18 for the Boston Celtics, Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans. He played his first six seasons with Boston, winning the NBA Finals in 2008, before joining Memphis in 2010. He earned six All-Defensive Team selections in seven seasons as a core player for the Grizzlies from 2010-17, making the playoffs each season.

The Grizzlies retired Allen’s No. 9 jersey in March.
