Newcastle United duo called up for duty by Julian Nagelsmann - Huge news for Malick Thiaw

· 6 November 2025, 17:00

Newcastle United fans have been very impressed with Malick Thiaw since he broke into the first team following Fabian Schar's concussion layoff.

The German seized his opportunity with both hands and has kept the Swiss defender our of the side ever since, forming a formidable partnership with Dutch defender Sven Botman.

Malick Thiaw has made some crucial tackles to keep Newcastle in the game, but beyond that, he looks extremely calm with the ball at his feet and isn't scared to keep control with a pressing attacker on his case.

It shocked many Newcastle fans when Thiaw was overlooked when Julian Nagelsmann named his Germany squad for the October international break, but he's made it impossible to be ignored since.

Malick Thiaw is back in the Germany squad and will be hoping ot add to his three caps in the upcoming break.

Julian Nagelsmann justified his selection in his press conference (h/t The Shields Gazette), citing him as a 'key' player for Newcastle.

“We want to get the two wins we need to secure qualification to the World Cup and to be assured of a place in the first pot for the World Cup draw in four weeks’ time. Then we’ll be able to continue finalising our planning for 2026.

"Malick Thiaw is a regular starter in the Premier League and has become a key player for his side ever since his move to England.”

Nick Woltemade received another Germany call up

Thiaw will be joined on the plane by Nick Woltemade who scored his first goal for Germany in October.

The giant striker has become a regular fixture up front for the German national side since joining Newcastle, and while he hasn't scored in his last couple of outings for the Toon, we expect he'll be handed another couple of caps in the upcoming break.

Meanwhile, we'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out which of our English contingent will be selected by Thomas Tuchel, with Anthony Gordon's hip injury a big factor in whether or not he'll be heading away to link up with the England camp this time.
