Florian Wirtz stars alongside Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal in new Adidas advert

Liverpool ace Florian Wirtz stars alongside Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi and Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal in a new Adidas advertisement for the 2026 World Cup.

Wirtz, who arrived at Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for a fee that could reach $157 million (£116 million) including add-ons, is expected to star for his country, Germany, at the tournament.

The 22-year-old missed the previous edition of the World Cup, which was held in Qatar, due to injury. However, he scored the first goal of Euro 2024 when Germany was hosting. Eventual victor Spain knocked them out in the quarter-finals.

On Wednesday, Adidas released several new international shirts for the next couple of years, some of which featured in an advert by the sportswear giant.

Wirtz is one of three high-profile footballers to appear in the commercial, along with Messi and Yamal.

Instructed by Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, the Liverpool star is seen dribbling past a team of American football players before scoring into an ice hockey net, which is a reference to two of the three co-hosts (the US, Canada and Mexico).

Yamal can be seen riding a bucking bronco before Messi scores a strike in 10-pin bowling by shooting a soccer ball down the alley.

Germany and Wirtz have had an eventful qualifying campaign so far. The Liverpool man scored a sublime free kick in a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland but has also received criticism regarding some of his performances.

While he is yet to score for Liverpool since making the move in the summer, he played very well against former manager Xabi Alonso on Tuesday as Real Madrid was beaten by a goal to nil.

"Nine out of 10 people would agree the Premier League is a bit more intense (than the Bundesliga), especially in all the games, so if you look at that then he already played a lot," Arne Slot said after that game.

"He has had his impact in a lot of games but has been unlucky with the end product either by himself or his teammates. For me, he exactly brought what we expected — a player who created a lot for the team.

"He will have his goals but I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that if you’re 22 or 23 and come to a different league that you might need some time to adjust to that intensity.

"Ryan Gravenberch was sitting here before (at the press conference) and it took him a while to adjust to the intensity, maybe even longer than it is going to take Florian."
