Hammers Boss Nuno Hints That “Beautiful Player” Will Continue In Team

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo held his usual pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s [Premier League](https://www.claretandhugh.info/premier-league-bio/) clash with Burnley.

While most questions focused on Lucas Paquetá, Freddie Potts, and the upcoming game, the Hammers boss was asked twice about El Hadji Malick Diouf — and his response was full of admiration.

The 20-year-old Senegalese defender endured a nightmare start in the 3-1 win over [Newcastle United](https://www.claretandhugh.info/newcastle-united-bio/). Early on, he linked beautifully with Crysencio Summerville to create a chance for Jarrod Bowen, but moments later was turned inside out by Jacob Murphy for the visitors’ opener.

That was followed by a misplaced pass, a cheap corner conceded, and a shaky spell that made him look, at times, completely out of his depth.

From Nervous Start to Standout Performer

But what followed was a masterclass in recovery and determination. Diouf steadily grew into the game, improving with every challenge and finishing as one of West Ham’s best players on the pitch.

His energy and confidence didn’t go unnoticed by Nuno, who delivered glowing praise for the £19 million summer signing.

“He’s a beautiful player. He’s so sensitive, and the way he arrived here — I think he’s living a dream. He has a lot of talent, but he has things to improve. He’s like a diamond you have to polish. We have great responsibilities, but we have to enjoy what we do, and I think Malick does that.”

It’s clear that Nuno sees something special in the young defender — and if Diouf continues to develop and learn he’ll be okay. That said, it is worth remembering that he has spent most of his fledgling career as a wingback and is learning new skills.
