**Preliminary contract talks are now “underway” with Dominik Szoboszlai and Liverpool, in a significant new claim from journalist Gregg Evans.**
Szoboszlai has surely been the Reds’ best player so far this season, finding a consistently high level while others around him have struggled.
The Hungarian is becoming an increasingly important performer for Liverpool, combining technical brilliance with a superb work ethic and versatility, and keeping hold of him is essential for the Premier League champions.
According to [_The Athletic_](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6778392/2025/11/06/dominik-szoboszlai-liverpool-captain/?source=twitteruk)‘s Evans, the Reds are now in talks with Szoboszlai regarding a contract extension at Anfield, in a big new update.
_“Preliminary discussions are taking place with Liverpool over a possible new deal for Szoboszlai, although club sources are downplaying that any agreement is imminent. His fellow midfielder Ryan Gravenberch is also out of contract in 2028 and has his own strong case for improved terms given his excellent form.”_
**Szoboszlai a vital player to tie down for Liverpool**
-------------------------------------------------------
Szoboszlai’s brilliance this season has shown just how important he is for Liverpool, with his leadership coming to the fore, as well as his general quality in several positions.
Still only 25, the Hungary captain should only continue to get better over the next two or three years, with Reds head coach [Arne Slot](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/46121716/liverpool-boss-slot-praises-unbelievable-szoboszlai) knowing exactly what a huge asset he is:
_“He’s always been the player that I think he understands what a Liverpool player should look like. If you wear this shirt, you should give everything no matter in what position you play. As a midfielder, he’s always the first one to track back and to press high. And today I don’t think he did anything wrong. Unbelievable game from him in the position he probably paid only two or three times in his life so it tells you a lot about the mentality he has.”_
It is only natural that some Europe’s other big clubs will be eyeing a potential move for Szoboszlai, given his status as arguably one of the best midfielders in the world, but he hopefully sees this future at Liverpool.
He is a contender to be the Reds’ next captain after Virgil van Dijk and deserves enormous praise for his influence during some tough moments this season.
