Liverpool are planning for the future of their team with a potential contract offer in mind
Liverpool are currently holding ‘preliminary discussions’ over a potential contract extension with an important Anfield figure.
The Reds currently have 12 players whose deals expire in either 2026 or 2027. Both Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson are out of contract next summer, and the club are keen to tie both down with new terms.
The Premier League champions are also planning ahead with other players and Dominik Szoboszlai is one of them.
Liverpool holding ‘discussions’ over new Dominik Szoboszlai contract
According to The Athletic, Liverpool have started ‘preliminary discussions’ with Szoboszlai over a ‘possible new deal’. However, the outlet claims that club sources are ‘downplaying’ the idea of a new agreement being imminent.
The Hungarian’s current deal does not expire until 2028 but after displaying his importance to the team, Liverpool can’t be blamed for wanting to lock in his services for the foreseeable future.
The Athletic report has also stated it ‘would not be a surprise’ if Liverpool consider Szoboszlai as a future captain contender. Virgil van Dijk is out of contract in 2027, by which time he will be approaching his 36th birthday.
Szoboszlai’s status within the Liverpool team make him an ‘obvious candidate’ to become the new skipper, should Van Dijk leave when his contract expires. Other senior figures like Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Konate and current vice-captain Robertson are all out of contract in either 2026 or 2027.
Should all or most leave the club, Arne Slot will need to rely on another senior figure, which could be Szoboszlai based on his reliable performances and team-playing attitude.
Dominik Szoboszlai praise
Szoboszlai has established himself as a crucial member of Slot’s team. While his performances in midfield have been influential, his time filling in at right-back really cemented his importance as a team player for the club.
“I just want to be on the pitch, as you mentioned, I’ve played at right-back a couple of times but that’s not my position. But I will help the team wherever he [Slot] needs me,” Szoboszlai replied.
Van Dijk was also complimentary of his teammate as he discussed his side’s performance against Madrid in the Champions League this week.
“What you see is what you get from Dom,” the centre-back said. “He is very important. The energy he brings on the pitch is incredible, the quality that he has is outstanding, and he is learning each and every game and he is developing into the player we all feel like he could be.”
