John Lynch Breaks Silence on 49ers' Inactivity at NFL Trade Deadline

The San Francisco 49ers didn’t make any moves on Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, despite some serious needs at the pass-rusher position.

With Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and Mykel Williams all out for the rest of the 2025 season, the 49ers reached out to the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins - inquiring about game-changing players like Trey Hendrickson, Jermaine Johnson and Jaelan Phillips.

According to 49ers general manager John Lynch, the “price was too high” for all of those potential options.

“We’d been working for a long time,” Lynch said during his weekly appearance with KNBR. “We’re top-four in the league in trades made this year. We’re always going to stay true to our process, you have to have discipline. We weren’t going to make an overpayment.”

Lynch explained that the 49ers weren’t excited enough about any of these players to keep pushing in trade negotiations.

“When the player is a complete difference-maker like Christian McCaffrey, you might keep going,” he added. “But at some point, you have to have discipline and we didn’t. You’re not going to make an overpayment.”

More Football:49ers Practice Decision Spells Good News for QB Brock Purdy

The 49ers have been injury-ridden on both sides of the ball this season. Franchise quarterback Brock Purdy has missed seven of the team’s nine games with a nagging turf toe injury, leaving the offense to be operated by veteran backup Mac Jones.

Despite these injury issues, San Francisco is 6-3 on the season - trailing the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams by a half a game in the NFC West standings. This past weekend, Jones led the 49ers to a 34-24 victory over the New York Giants.

Purdy was limited in practice on Wednesday, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team plans to get him more first-team reps leading up to Sunday’s Week 10 matchup against the Rams.
