Spoelstra landed from Heat road trip minutes after firefighters were dispatched to blaze

While Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra owns the Coral Gables home that a two-alarm fire broke out at early Thursday morning, the house was empty and there were no reported injuries.

The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told the Miami Herald that the call came in at 4:36 a.m. on Thursday as a “structure fire at single-family residence,” when the Heat’s chartered flight from Denver was still in the air.

Spoelstra was on the team’s flight from Denver after the Heat completed its four-game trip with a 122-112 loss to the Nuggets on Thursday night.

The Heat’s chartered flight left Denver International Airport at 1:40 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and landed at Miami International airport at 5:11 a.m. EST on Thursday, according to Flight Aware tracking data, about 35 minutes after firefighters were dispatched to Spoelstra’s home.

Spoelstra, 55, arrived at the home shortly after the plane landed, with several fire crews already working to try to contain the fire.

The Heat was off Thursday before hosting the Charlotte Hornets on Friday and Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday.

Spoelstra, who is currently the NBA’s longest active-tenured head coach, is in his 18th season as the Heat’s head coach after initially being hired by the organization as its video coordinator in 1995. He was also recently named the new head coach of Team USA men’s national team. The Heat has qualified for the playoffs 14 times in Spoelstra’s first 17 seasons at the helm, including in each of the last six seasons. The Heat has also won two NBA championships in 2012 and 2013 with Spoelstra as head coach. In addition, Spoelstra is already the winningest head coach in franchise history in both the regular season and playoffs. Spoelstra is in the middle of an eight-year, $120 million contract he signed with the team in January 2024.
