The latest on Wolves’ new manager hunt as Middlesbrough respond to an approach for Rob Edwards.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly been told to steer away from Rob Edwards by the head coach’s current employers, Middlesbrough.
Wolves approached Boro this afternoon as they have firmed Edwards as their first-choice target to fill their managerial vacancy, several days on from Vitor Pereira’s sacking. Middlesbrough have rebuffed Wolves’ motion, however, reiterating their stance that Edwards is not available.
This is according to The Telegraph’s John Percy, who reports Boro are ‘adamant’ Edwards will not be leaving the club. Meanwhile, BBC Sport reports Wolves would have to pay ‘significant compensation’ if they are to secure Edwards’ services, so it’s a complicated situation.
Can Wolves still appoint Rob Edwards despite Middlesbrough rejection?
Edwards to Wolves may not necessarily be dead in the water, as the manager himself could still push to make the move to Molineux. There’s nothing to suggest he will at this stage, but you can never say never in football.
If Edwards were to leave Boro for Wolves, he would be reunited with the club he spent time with as both a player and a coach. The now 42-year-old played 100 times for Wolves as a centre-half between 2004 and 2008. The 15-time former Wales international also took interim charge of Wolves in 2016 after the sacking of Walter Zenga, following coaching with the youth sides.
Edwards recently addressed the speculation of a Molineux return, telling the Northern Echo: “As I keep on saying, it’s my wife and my daughter that are keeping me abreast of it all, I’ve not paid any attention to it at all myself.
“I’m just concentrating on my job here at Middlesbrough. That’s absolutely my only focus, and I’m really pleased with what we’ve delivered over the last couple of days. It’s been a difficult turnaround for everyone. I’m really pleased with everyone’s focus. Hopefully, you can clearly see that my mind has only been on this.”
