T

he Jacksonville Jaguars are going all-in on 2025. Sitting at 5-3 and in second place in the AFC South, the Jaguars are one of the NFL’s hottest teams to begin the new campaign are in prime position to clinch their first playoff spot since 2022. Investing heavily in new talent at the trade deadline– trading for cornerback Greg Newsome and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers— it is clear that the Jaguars have high expectations for themselves this season.

Adding Meyers was a very bold move but after losing rookie Travis Hunter for an unknown amount of time due to an injury, it was clear that acquiring Meyers was a good move. And with Meyers now in Jacksonville ready to bring his star power to the Jaguars’ receiving room, general manager James Gladstone has some high praise for his new pass catcher.

Gladstone’s Comments

Meyers is coming off of his first 1,000 season and while his numbers this season are not nearly as good, a lot of that was attributed to being on a Las Vegas Raiders team that is struggling mightily on offense. But now that he is on the Jaguars, Gladstone is eager to see Meyers go-off and is especially excited for how he can help the Jaguars fix a major issue they have had this season– catching the football.

“We’re looking forward to seeing how his skill set fits within the system,” Gladstone said. “I think from afar it does. You think about where we’re at in terms of volume of drops, what’s his superpower? It’s not dropping the football, right? So you just take it from the surface level, it seems fitting.”

Catching 33 passes for 352 yards and zero touchdowns so far this season, Meyers is hungry for a fresh start and goes from being the No. 2 receiver on his team to potentially being the top target. And despite joining an entirely new offense, Meyers’ prior relationship with wide receiver’s coach Edgar Bennett– who was Meyers’ receivers coach with the Raiders in 2023 and 2024– should help him acclimate quickly.

Meyers’ New Opportunity

Meyers’ trade from the Raiders was a long time coming. First requesting a trade back in August, Meyers told reporters up until last week that he was looking to be moved, telling the media prior to the deadline that he wanted to be “in a good spot.” And now, with the Jaguars dealing with multiple injuries at the receiver position, Meyers has the chance to really show what he can do.

And with how many drops that the Jaguars receivers have accumulated this season, leading the league with 19, Gladstone was quick to call Meyers’ ability to catch the ball as his superpower. Since entering the league as a rookie in 2019, Meyers only has 11 drops in 98 games and has never had more than two drops in any of his seven seasons. After Gladstone made the superpower comment, Meyers responded happily.

“I appreciate it,” Meyers said. “Even knowing that … that’s been an issue, seeing the guys work after practice, work during practice, how serious they take it, it’s ball drills all over. So that’s a testament to them, honestly. They’re working on it. They’re getting better every day, and I respect that. So hopefully I can come in and do my part and I don’t add to the problem.”
