The San Francisco 49ers have suffered a brutal amount of injuries on both sides of the ball this season, but they have fought their way through it and will face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10 with the NFC West still up for grabs.
It’s a huge matchup that will go a long way toward deciding the division winner, and if quarterback Mac Jones can pull off another victory for San Francisco, it could add more fuel to what analyst Dan Orlovsky recently described as a “brewing controversy.”
“There is a brewing QB controversy in San Francisco. Brock Purdy, really good player. Mac Jones has been absolutely sensational in his time. Doing it with people that have been beat up, stars and perimeter players that haven’t been healthy, he’s been knocked around, yet this team is still in the playoff race, and it’s because of the quarterback play. There’s a quarterback controversy brewing in San Francisco,” Orlovsky said.

Jones has filled in for Brock Purdy as well as anybody could have expected, throwing 10 touchdown passes with five interceptions and winning five of seven starts.
This game will likely be a major indicator of which way the coaching staff will decide to go once Purdy is healthy.
Jones had a string of three lackluster performances prior to the Week 9 win against the New York Giants, and if he falters against Los Angeles, Purdy’s job will likely be safe when he recovers from his toe injury.
However, if Jones wins this game, Orlovsky may be right.
Things could get very interesting, and it wouldn’t be unheard of, because the scenario is exactly how Purdy became the starter three years ago, playing well in place of injured starter Jimmy Garoppolo.
