The Boston Red Sox will need to dish out some serious dough this offseason — and that’s just if they want to retain their own players. ESPN’s Kylie McDaniel put together a list of contract projections for the top free agents in Major League Baseball, which included three names who spent last season playing at Fenway Park: 3B Alex Bregman: 5 years, $160 million ($32M AAV)RHP Lucas Giolito: 2 years, $32 million ($16M AAV)LHP Steven Matz: 2 years, $17 million ($8.5M AAV) Bregman, 31, is among the most valuable free agents in all of baseball, and likely will secure the long-term deal he has coveted for so long because of it. McDaniel ranked him at No. 4, pointing to his consistency with the bat and lack of questions about his defensive identity. Giolito, 31, declined his end of an option that would have paid roughly $19 million in 2026, which might not pay dividends considering it looks unlikely that he’ll receive the qualifying offer that would have paid $22 million and is projected to make an annual salary of $16 million. McDaniel rated him at No. 24. McDaniel ranked him at No. 45. The Red Sox were also mentioned in sections about No. 8 Kyle Schwarber and No. 10 Munetaka Murakami, two middle-of-the-order sluggers who are projected to make $128 million and $80 million, respectively.
