Shams Charania Thinks the Spurs’ Success Hinges on Victor Wembanyama

Charania breaks down how Wemby’s unique offseason training and work with NBA legends led to the Spurs’ strong start this season. It was a busy summer for San Antonio Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama. The 7-foot-4 phenom has always had physical gifts that can’t be taught, but after his season was cut short last year by a blood clot, Wemby decided to take things to the next level. He first traveled across the world to China and Japan, where he was able to dabble in Chan meditation and Shaolin Kung Fu with monks after visiting a Shaolin temple. After that, he returned stateside to take in the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, fitting for the player who’s earned the nickname “The Alien.” In between all that, he made stops in Costa Rica and Tokyo to play soccer, while also returning home to France to host a chess tournament. But of course, Wembanyama eventually returned to the court to ready himself for Year 3 in the league, and he called on the best to help his game — Kevin Garnett and Hakeem Olajuwon. How has that turned out in the young season so far? Just career-high averages in scoring, rebounds, steals, and blocks through the season’s first seven games.“A lot of it is going to be driven by Victor Wembanyama,” Shams Charania said on the latest episode of Network with Rich Kleiman. “His health, how he’s doing. We have to look at the young stars in today’s game and how focused they are, how determined they look. When you look at [Wemby], Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, Luka Dončić, these guys just have a drive, a focus, and they clearly want to be great and they want to be the best versions of themselves.”In addition to being the best version of himself, Wembanyama wants his team to be able to be the best version of itself, currently boasting a 5-2 record, good enough to be tied with the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets for third in the Western Conference. While it certainly appears the squad has leveled up this year, time will tell if any roster moves are made down the line or if the San Antonio front office will stick with what it has.“Right now, I think they’re more internal. I think the big move they made last year was getting De’Aaron Fox, and then I think from there, they really wanna see what this group internally can do,” Charania said. “Because kind of like Oklahoma City these last few years, it’s like, we don’t really know what we have unntil we see what our players can do come playoff time. And I think that’s the next step for them, going into the playoffs with this group, seeing what they can do in the playoffs, can they get by in a round, can they make a round competitive. How far can you go?”Be sure to catch the full conversation between Charnia and Kleiman across Boardroom and Yahoo Sports platforms.Read More:101112post6ORdate MISCELLANEOUS November 6, 2025Tim Wu on ‘The Age of Extraction’ and How Big Tech Broke the Internet’s Promise Media November 6, 2025Shams Charania on Wemby’s Greatness, Learning from Woj, and the New NBA Blueprint Film & TV November 6, 2025Booked and Busy: How Studios Turn Bestsellers Into Blockbusters Sports November 6, 2025Shams Charania Dishes on Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier, & Sports Betting in the NBA Sports November 6, 2025Shams Charania Breaks Down the Chicago Bulls’ Surprising Start, Led By Billy Donovan Sports November 5, 2025How Darius Garland Found His Perfect Fit with New Balance Boardroom Staff
