Pistons claim former King F/C Isaac Jones off waivers

Just days after being waived by the Sacramento Kings, free agency forward/center Isaac Jones has found a new home.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Detroit Pistons claimed Jones off free agency waivers on Thursday afternoon.

Undrafted out of Washington State in the 2024 NBA Draft, Jones (25) turned heads in his rookie campaign. He was showing enough promise that then Kings general manager Monte McNair elected to convert Jones’s two-way deal to a standard contract.

Through 40 games, Jones averaged 3.4 points and 1.4 rebounds on 56.1 percent shooting in limited minutes (7.6).

Sacramento, now led by Scott Perry, had a clear need for forward depth after Keegan Murray went down in preseason. Russell Westbrook ultimately filled the forward vacancy, as Jones didn’t receive much playing time in his second season.

Aiming to add free agent Precious Achiuwa, the Kings elected to waive the non-guaranteed deal of Jones.

Detroit will now take on the $1,955,377 partially guaranteed contract of Jones.

The $191,043 that applied to the Sacramento cap/tax is now removed. https://t.co/Hz7mf8Aj0E

An interesting note about Jones is that, up to this point in his Summer League and season, he and his developmental coach, Dipesh Mistry (also the Summer League head coach), had been working on molding him into a more forward-oriented player rather than a center.

At 6’8 without notable rim protection capabilities, they agreed that Jones would be able to see the floor most as a forward. With that in mind, his corner three was priority number one.

Jones will have to earn his way onto the floor in Detroit, but it’ll be interesting to see the role his new organization views as ideal.
