The Chargers and football world are mourning the loss of Woodrow Lowe, a standout collegiate linebacker turned long-time NFL stalwart with the San Diego Chargers. Lowe died on Thursday at the age of 71 at his home in Tennessee after an extended illness.
A Storied Career from Tide to Chargers

Lowe made his mark as a three-time All-American at the University of Alabama Crimson Tide under Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1972-75, earning consensus honors in 1974. He holds the Alabama record for most tackles in a single season and ranks third all-time in career tackles for the program.
Selected in the 5th round of the 1976 NFL Draft by the Chargers, Lowe played eleven seasons in San Diego (1976-1986), missing only one game in his career. Known for his durability and versatility, he intercepted 21 passes—with 4 returned for touchdowns—and served as a defensive leader and team captain.

Lowe’s influence extended beyond the field. He later transitioned into coaching, including high school programs and as an assistant at his alma-mater high school in Phenix City, Alabama. His induction into the College Football Hall of Fame and Alabama Sports Hall of Fame reflect his impact.
As for the Chargers, he is remembered not just for stats but for embodying consistency and character in an era when the franchise was building identity. His leadership remains a touchstone for the organization.
Remembering a Champion
“The game’s best always remember the teammates and coaches who brought out the best in them,” wrote one former Chargers teammate in tribute. Lowe is being remembered as that kind of teammate: steady, tough, quietly exceptional.
Plans for a public memorial have not been announced; the family has asked for privacy as they begin funeral arrangements.
