Wausau nonprofit receives Packers gear donation to keep clients warm this winter

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - [Open Door of Marathon County](https://opendoorofmarathonco.org/), a Wausau nonprofit, is planning to give out Green Bay Packers gear to clients adjusting to life after prison and those experiencing homelessness in the area.

“It’s absolutely needed. Nothing is going to go to waste, honestly,” said Anne Drow, executive director of Open Door of Marathon County.

The organization received shirts, shoes, sweatshirts and other items from the Packers. The donation came after the organization received an email from an Open Door volunteer a client needing a pair of size 18 shoes.

“They’re just like, we’ll see what we can do about that, and then he was explaining a little bit about what Open Door was to this lady on the phone in the Packer head office, and she’s like, oh my God, what else do you need?” Drow said.

A few days later, two boxes with a total of 60 lbs. of clothes arrived at the nonprofit.

“It’s everything, we got shoes, this is a small, but there’s like, there’s like sweatshirts. Yeah. Like t-shirts,” Drow said.

Drow said they haven’t given out many of the items yet, but people who have received something have been appreciative. Last month, 53 new people visited the closet.

“They’re just like, my God, that is so comfy though. It’s so nice. I could not afford that amount, that kind of thing,” Drow said.

Despite receiving the packages, the organization is still asking for donations.

“Right now, we need jackets. We need gloves. Gloves would be huge right now. Socks. Long underwear, that kind of thing. Winter wear, basically,” Drow said.

Drow said the team appreciates handmade items that will keep clients warm too.

“This lady made all these hats. I freaking love that. Hats and scarves for our people,” Drow said.

Drow said they also accept travel hygiene items.

Open Door of Marathon County accepts donations at 319 N 4th St suite 2, Wausau, WI from 5 a.m. to noon, Monday through Saturday.
