Bruno Guimaraes has been Mr Incredible for Newcastle United since arriving in January 2022.

Bruno Guimaraes has vowed that only a broken leg will keep him out of the Newcastle United team.

The Brazilian has been under the weather in recent days and did not train before the Champions League win over Athletic Bilbao. He was notably poor against West Ham United - as were the rest of the team - as Newcastle surrendered an early lead.

Guimaraes was not fully up to speed last night but kept his place in the side as Newcastle brushed aside Athletic. Goals from Dan Burn and Joelinton put the Magpies in a commanding position for at least a play-off place.

Bruno Guimaraes on Athletic Bilbao fitness

A weary-eyed Guimaraes - looking notably fatigued while speaking to reporters - admitted to feeling “bad” throughout the win over Athletic. He told reporters: “I’ll be honest. I felt bad right through the game, very tired. It was like playing with 10kg on my back.

“But I will do everything I can for this club. I love to play here. It is my home. It was big proof that I will not give up for my club. I will always do what I can.”

Bruno Guimaraes ‘white lie’ to Eddie Howe

Speaking to NewcastleWorld, the Toon skipper joked he needs to be more honest with Eddie Howe in future. He also claimed only a broken leg will rule him out of Newcastle action.

“It was too much, it is never easy to play when you are tired,” Guimaraes said. “When you try to run but your body doesn’t follow you, it’s hard. I probably should be honest with the gaffer and say I wasn’t fit enough to play. But the only way for me not to play is if I break my leg. I always want to play. I’m a little bit better and hope I will be 100 per cent fit for Sunday.”

Eddie Howe blindsided by Bruno Guimaraes

“He wasn’t saying that to me this morning!” Howe said when told about Guimaraes not feeling 100 per cent. “He said he was feeling a million dollars this morning - that’s news to me.

“No, in all seriousness, his character is undoubted. His will to play is so strong. I had a detailed talk with him today and he assured me he’d be fit to produce the performance the team needed, while probably acknowledging that he wasn’t at 100% fitness.

“That’s why we withdrew him when we did, to try and protect him. But I think we lost a little bit when he came off, speaking honestly, that’s how important he is to us. I thought he performed very well.”
