Newcastle United 2-0 Athletic Club: Joe Buck reaction
Brentford v Newcastle United: The PGMOL have confirmed who will referee this weekend’s Premier League match at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Magpies haven’t won on the road in the league since April and know they must get a positive result if they want to make sure the gap between themselves and the other teams chasing European qualification doesn’t continue to grow. However, Keith Andrews’ side have a good record at home this season having beaten Liverpool, Manchester United and Aston Villa already this season.
The Magpies generally have a good record away at Brentford, although they were beaten 4-2 in this fixture last season in arguably the lowest moment of what would turn out to be a very memorable campaign. That defeat sparked a nine-game winning run for the Magpies and they will hope that a similar result this weekend can once again help to transform their season, particularly in the league.
Brentford v Newcastle United referee confirmed
Brentford rescued a point on that day through a very late Fabio Carvalho goal. The Blues, though, believed that the goal should have been disallowed for a potential offside on Dango Ouattara, but the VAR opted to stick with the onfield call and allow the goal.

Just over two years ago, Attwell made headlines following a clash between Newcastle United and Arsenal at St James’ Park. That game, played on Saturday 4 November 2023, was won by the hosts as Anthony Gordon struck in the 64th minute to seal a 1-0 win.
However, the Gunners were left dismayed when that goal was allowed to stand after a number of VAR checks. The technology checked whether the ball stayed in play in the build-up, for a foul by Joelinton and then an offside before eventually allowing the goal to stand.
Attwell, who was the man in the middle that day, also had to deal with fiery incidents involving Bruno Guimaraes and Kai Havertz as tempers flared at a wet St James’ Park. Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, cut an irate figure post-match, stating: “I have to be here now to say it is not acceptable,” Arteta told Sky Sports.
“We didn't deserve to lose the match. We lose the match because of the clear and obvious decisions. It's embarrassing. A disgrace. That's what it is - a disgrace.
“You cannot imagine the amount of messages I got saying this cannot continue. I am wasting my time. We are wasting our time. I don't want to be in the hands of people.”
This weekend, Attwell will be assisted by Constantine Hatzidakis and Ian Hussin with Tom Bramall as fourth official at the Gtech Community Stadium. Paul Tierney will be on VAR duty at Stockley Park and he will be assisted by Nick Greenhalgh.
