U21s preview: Southampton v Arsenal

Our young Gunners will look to regather momentum in the Premier League 2 when they travel to Southampton on Friday, November 7.

The match will take place at Staplewood Training Ground, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm (UK time).

Max Porter's under-21s haven't picked up three points domestically since their trip to Derby County at the back end of September, with a 2-2 draw with West Ham United and the recent 2-1 loss to Chelsea having produced a tricky October. We currently sit 13th in the table with 11 points.

When we took on the Blues almost a fortnight ago, Marcell Washington looked to ignite a second-half fightback after our opponents had struck on either side of the interval, but a resolute Chelsea defence held firm to prevent any further breakthroughs.

The opposition

--------------

The Saints have enjoyed a strong start to the PL2 campaign, having won five and drawn two from their first eight games, whilst their unbeaten league record would have remained unblemished had it not been for a 3-1 defeat to Leicester City just under two weeks ago. They currently sit fourth in the table with 17 points.

Cup competitions have been less kind to the seaside club, who've suffered losses to Truro City and Woking, and drawn 3-3 with Aldershot Town in the National League Cup, whilst they were also held 1-1 by Real Madrid in the Premier League International Cup at St. Mary's Stadium.

We last met Southampton in February 2024, when we turned the game around from 2-1 down, after Nathan Butler-Oyedeji had initially given us an early lead, with second half finishes from Osman Kamara, Oulad M'Hand and Jimi Gower, to seal a 4-2 victory at the Mangata Pay UK Stadium.
