Arne Slot has started to turn things around for Liverpool and it looks like the early season slump hasn’t put the club off entertaining extending the manager’s contract.

Arne Slot is experienced enough to know that Liverpool’s recent form is only a start and that they are not entirely out of the woods.

Up next is Man City and the chance to prove that a corner really has been turned with the task of keeping Erling Haaland quiet the next barrier to overcome for a rejuvenated defence.

Liverpool eye Arne Slot contract extension timeline

A win would see Liverpool as the only team to beat both Arsenal and City and serve as a reminder that there is still a long way to go in the Premier League title race. Despite Arsenal’s serene progress to the top of the table and eight consecutive clean sheets, there is a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season.

A win would also reaffirm Slot’s position as Liverpool boss and silence any remaining critics that he may still have after the recent slump in form. The word out of Anfield is that the success of last season hasn’t been forgotten and that a new contract remains a priority with TEAMtalk giving an update on the timeline of when a new deal could be agreed. According to Dean Jones, the club is hoping to tie up the Dutchman beyond the next two years before the end of the season.

Slot has addressed rumours about a new contract recently but he only had one thing on his mind: "This is the last question that I was expecting. My focus is completely on getting Liverpool back to winning ways. That is my first answer and my second answer, contract talks, if they are even there, we never speak about this here. Let us first start to win again, that is my main focus."

Slot picks out the fine margins as Liverpool difference

Reflecting on Liverpool’s recent form, Slot has always felt that it had been the fine margins that have been against his team, via the club’s official website: “The common points, I think both teams played quite similar against us. Maybe the difference was that I told the players today that I wanted them to either press really high or go to a low block, because Vinicius and Mbappe are for so many reasons incredible players but their deep runs, timing of deep runs, their pace is next level. So don't give away any space in behind and that's what our last line did very well tonight.

“A very solid defensive performance in both games. But it also helps if you are not one goal down or two goals down, because if you are one or two goals down you need to take extra risk, you need to force much more. And if you have to force and take extra risk then you're sometimes a bit exposed on the other side as well. But in my opinion, in general, even the games we've lost, we have hardly conceded a chance, except for the set-piece goals of course we conceded.”

Slot isn’t stupid, he knows that the defence is where Liverpool need to improve and it will be put to the test against a City team that can’t stop scoring.
