Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali might be the man who puts out fires for the Magpies, but he’s shown a softer side in this photo.

Midfield maestro. Italian stallion. One of the best in the business.

In the last two years he’s built a reputation as one of the toughest operators in town, snuffing out attacks, blunting top flight midfields and attacks alike. But he’s got a softer side, as has been shown by a snap shared of the player on social media by wife Juliette Pastore.

Pastore, heavily pregnant with the couple’s first child, took to social media to share this snap of the midfielder with their dog, Margot, sprawled out asleep, showing Tonali like you’ve never seen him before.

The midfielder’s arm is pictured cradling his four-legged friend, while wife Pastore’s hand his present on the dog’s face. The caption reads: “Polpettina”. Translated from Italian to English, it means little or small meatball.

Sandro Tonali gives unconvincing answer on NUFC future

“This extension was three years ago after the ban,” Tonali told a media huddle after Wednesday night’s Champions League win over Athletic Club. “I don't know why everybody spoke about this. I signed after the ban for another year. And I'm happy, not just for one more year here, but I'm happy for the people, for the fans, for every player, every member of the staff here in Newcastle. Every day I work to win every game. I work for every person in Newcastle.”

Tonali also gave an unconvincing answer when asked if he views his long-term future at Newcastle. Despite being unprompted, the 25-year-old mentioned former teammate Isak.

“This is a tough question because in football you need to think year on year,” Tonali added. “I don’t want to say I want to stay here 10 years and in two years, three years, four years, five years I will go. I want to think, just for me, year on year. This is football. Last summer was tough for us, for Alex (Isak), but this is football.

“If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything. I don’t want to say, ‘Yes, I want to stay here for 10 years’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”

Eddie Howe on Sandro Tonali’s Newcastle United future

Eddie Howe discussed Tonali's secret contract extension once the news broke several weeks ago. He told reporters: "A lot happened around the time he was banned. A lot of discussions were had.

“Sandro has felt the love of everyone connected with the football club. He felt that love and support and needed it at the time. He has been brilliant for us. Sandro is happy, he is enjoying his football, he is integral to the team."
