Albion expect to see more from Baleba at Palace - but midfield decision looms

Fabian Hurzeler expects to see more progress from Carlos Baleba at Selhurst Park.

And he is happy with Mats Wieffer in a right-back role which also sees him get forward or join in with midfield.

Baleba was below his best in the 3-0 win over Leeds but Hurzeler felt he took a step forward as he played 90 minutes.

Wieffer joined the club to play the role Baleba now has but Hurzeler has preferred him at right-back.

That is expected to continue at Crystal Palace although Joel Veltman is now an option after injury.

James Milner and Jack Hinshelwood are nearing fitness after injury-enforced absences.

[Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/?ref=au) will face a midfield decision around the turn of the year with Baleba due to head to AFCON with Cameroon.

Speaking in his pre-Palace press conference, Hurzeler said: “We keep pushing, we keep trying to support him and help him, and I think he made a good step forward against Leeds, so hopefully he can continue this against Palace."

Hurler likes what Wieffer offers in his version of the right-back role although he accepts it gives him a different test defensively.

The Seagulls boss said: "It just changes his game against the ball, where he has to defend as a right-back. That's a change regarding his position as a six.

"But it's positive to have players who can play in several positions and Mats is one of these.

"It gives flexibility and it also gives us a chance to replace players when we might need to replace them.

"We need to analyse the individual situation from the players, we need to analyse the demand for the next opponent and then we choose our decision."

"We're all quite happy with the performance from Mats."
