Wayne Rooney’s verdict on Gary Neville as a player after the Man Utd legend’s Premier League Hall of Fame induction

Gary Neville spent his entire legendary Manchester United playing career under Sir Alex Ferguson after his emergence from the youth academy in the 1990s.

The ex-United skipper had a remarkable spell at Old Trafford and Neville made 600 appearances for the Red Devils and scored seven times and registered 49 assists.

Neville has played down his playing career in the aftermath of his retirement in 2011, despite being a longstanding first-team figure under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Wayne Rooney has now highlighted why his former England and United teammate was such a top-quality right-back in his playing career for club and country.

“I think he’s very, very underrated, Gary, as a player, he’s annoying at times, guys, but as a player, he’s really underrated,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

His ability, his delivery of the ball, his work rate, his understanding of his position.

“If you ask any centre-back, he’s brilliant to play alongside because they knew he was there alongside them.”

Wayne Rooney opens up on a major truth about Gary Neville being included in the Premier League Hall of Fame

United have seen several players included in the Premier League Hall of Fame since it was first announced in 2020, with Sir Alex Ferguson also being inducted.

Rooney secured his place in the Hall of Fame in 2022, while the likes of Sir David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes all feature in there as well.

United’s all-time leading scorer has admitted that he voted for Neville to be an inductee in 2025, something he can do as an existing Hall of Fame member.

“He didn’t overcomplicate things,” Rooney added.

“I think that’s a big strength to have as well. So, yeah, I voted for him. I think he deserves to go in.”

United legend Neville lifted eight Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, three FA Cups and three League Cups during his remarkable spell at Old Trafford.
