Anthony Gordon likely to miss Brentford vs Newcastle, but Eddie Howe offers injury hope

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Anthony Gordon could miss Newcastle United’s game against Brentford on Sunday.

The 24-year-old was forced off during Newcastle United’s win over Athletic Club in the Champions League, with a hip problem resulting in him being withdrawn in the first half.

Anthony Gordon looked incredibly uncomfortable, and the injury could now rule him out of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Brentford.

“We don’t think it’s a serious injury,” Eddie Howe said in his pre-match press conference.

“We’re going to get him scanned and we’re awaiting the results. There’s every chance he might miss out on Sunday but we’ll give him every opportunity to be fit.”

While it is disappointing that Gordon is likely to miss the game at the Gtech Community Stadium, it is encouraging that the injury is not believed to be serious.

He started the Champions League win over Athletic Club, but was initially deployed on the right rather than the left.

The Gordon injury will allow Harvey Barnes to play on his preferred side, as he attempts to take his Champions League form into the Premier League. All of his goals and assists this season have come in Europe, having provided the cross for Joelinton’s header on Wednesday night.

The Brentford game is a great chance for Barnes, who features in Geordie Boot Boys’ predicted Newcastle United starting XI.
