With over a quarter of the season gone and Everton’s strikers only having one goal between them in the Premier League, the Blues are being linked with a move in the January transfer window for more firepower. But a former Goodison Park chief has played down one particular rumour.

Beto, who also netted against League One Mansfield Town in the Carabao Cup, headed in the only Premier League goal from an Everton striker so far this term in the 3-2 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 30.

Thierno Barry, a £27m summer signing from Villarreal, has yet to break his duck and having started at the Stadium of Light on Monday, missed a sitter that could have put the visitors 2-0 up.

Last month, a report by Football Insider claimed sources had told them that the Blues have “concrete” interest in signing former Brentford striker Ivan Toney, now of Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, in January.

Although the piece stated that West Ham United are also in the hunt to bring him back to London as he supposedly seeks a Premier League return to aid his chances of earning a place in England’s World Cup squad, Everton “are being seen by the player and his camp as a better fit” because he is “a classic David Moyes player.”

However, the same outlet now quotes Keith Wyness, who was Everton’s CEO between 2004-09 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, as telling their Inside Track podcast: “It’s one I don’t see happening.

“There’s been a lot of talk about it, but my own sources are saying no, Richarlison is still the frontrunner.

“Richarlison is younger than Ivan Toney. He’s 28 and Toney is 29. So I think that would bear a little bit of a factor in the situation.

“I also think Richarlison is going to be doing his best to stake a claim for the Brazil World Cup team.

“I think Moyes might be getting him at a good time in January because he’ll be playing out of his skin to get into that World Cup squad.

“Plus, he knows Everton well, he’s well received by the fans. That to me would be an easier fit than Toney, who can be somewhat moody, and coming from Saudi is not necessarily the right preparation.

“I think Richarlison would be a safer bet and I’m hearing he’s ahead in the list at the moment.”
