Tuchel misses a trick with Welbeck - but it's still not too late

And has he left himself short of specialist No.9 options?

After two to three weeks of increasing speculation, Tuchel WILL put his trust in the Manchester United production line in his quest to support and cover for Harry Kane.

But that will be with Marcus Rashford – not with Welbeck.

Welbeck was not among the seven forwards named while Kane was the only specialist No.9.

The obvious deduction from the names listed is that Rashford will be asked to work as a centre-forward when Kane is not on the pitch.

Rashford, like Welbeck, is a Manchester United product and can play that role.

But he is a wideman, not a specialist No.9. and, in a squad this size, surely there must be room for specialists.

Neither Welbeck nor Ollie Watkins is on board for now – and, of the two, Welbeck was the more deserving of a call.

Fabian Hurzeler would not disclose whether he has spoken to Tuchel when asked yesterday.

One assumes he probably has – and that he will have told him about Welbeck’s role around the pitch and off the field.

It feels like he would be a perfect squad member in a big squad at a big tournament.

Playing the match, not playing the occasion, as was taught as a kid at United.

Welbeck turns 35 this month – so will still be 35 at the time of next year’s finals. But he is as fit and as good as ever and probably wiser.

Of course, the hopes that he could go are not over yet.

The mission will be to retain that form, fitness and focus.

But Tuchel has shown his hands in terms of thoughts for his attacking line-up.

If there is a silver lining for Albion, it will be that Welbeck will rest over the next fortnight.

He will not be heading to Tirana for international action.

Albion strikers can get injured on international duty, as we have seen in the past fortnight.

But Seagulls players, staff and fans were rooting for Welbeck as 10am drew close on Friday.

They still are.
