Just in: Rob Edwards' Middlesbrough press conference cancelled today after Wolves move made

Rob Edwards' press conference ahead of Middlesbrough's clash with Birmingham City has been canceled amid reports linking him with the Wolverhampton Wanderers job.

The English coach is one of several candidates being eyed by the Premier League club after they sacked Vitor Pereira last weekend. He has impressed during his time in charge at the Riverside, where he replaced Michael Carrick in July.

Edwards knows Wolves well, having spent time at Molineux as a player, and he may be enticed to make a return to a club struggling in the English top-flight. He likely will have been asked about the possibility in Friday's presser but it is no longer taking place.

Dominic Shaw of the Northern Echo confirmed this in a post on his X account, stating that the press conference scheduled for 1PM was cancelled. Boro are preparing to host Birmingham in the EFL Championship tomorrow.

Edwards has overseen seven wins and two defeats in 14 league games, with his side sitting third in the Championship table. He signed a three-year deal when arriving in the summer but could now return to the Premier League and to Wolves.

The cancellation of the press conference followed reports that the Old Gold had intensified its pursuit of Edwards. It's claimed that he's now the "frontrunner" to succeed Pereira.

The 42-year-old's previous experience of top-flight management came with Luton Town in the 2023-24 campaign. He fared relatively well given a limited budget and strength in opposition, with The Hatters finishing 18th, relegated but the best of the three promoted sides that season.
