Wolves-linked Middlesbrough head coach's future plunged into fresh doubt by new development

Sheffield United, Leeds United and FA Cup - The YP FootballTalk Podcast

Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards’ scheduled press conference has been cancelled amid interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Premier League basement boys have been strongly linked with the 42-year-old, who only took the reins at the Riverside in the summer.

He has made an impressive start to his reign as head coach, steering the club into third place in the Championship.

However, it appears a huge spanner could be thrown into the works. Middlesbrough are said to have knocked back an approach from Wolves, who are seemingly keen on hiring Edwards as Vitor Pereira’s successor.

Press conference cancelled

Despite Middlesbrough’s apparent determination to retain their boss, his future has been plunged into fresh doubt by the cancellation of his press conference.

Edwards was due to face the media this afternoon (November 7), with his side due to face Birmingham City tomorrow (November 8).

While the reason for cancelling the gathering has not been confirmed, fans have been left fearing Edwards may be on the move.

Rob Edwards’ midweek stance

After Middlesbrough’s draw with Leicester City on Tuesday (November 4), Edwards said: “It’s exactly the same, nothing has changed.

“As I keep on saying, it’s my wife and my daughter that are keeping me abreast of it all, I’ve not paid any attention to it at all myself.

“I’m just concentrating on my job here at Middlesbrough. That’s absolutely my only focus, and I’m really pleased with what we’ve delivered over the last couple of days.

“It’s been a difficult turnaround for everyone. I’m really pleased with everyone’s focus. Hopefully, you can clearly see that my mind has only been on this.”

Edwards represented Wolves during his playing career and later returned to Molineux as a coach behind the scenes. In 2016, he had a spell as caretaker manager following the sacking of Walter Zenga.

It has been suggested Wolves are hoping Edwards’ connection to the Midlands club could sway him towards a return.
