Wolverhampton Wanderers have pinpointed Rob Edwards as the leading candidate to head into the Molineux dugout and they are still attempting to convince Middlesbrough to sanction the move after they initially rebuffed their approach, GIVEMESPORT senior reporter Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on the latest episode of our Market Madness podcast.
The hierarchy have been seeking a fresh presence in the dugout since sacking Vitor Pereira on Sunday, less than 24 hours after Wolves suffered a heavy defeat to fellow Premier League strugglers Fulham.

Wolves are expected to hold further discussions with Middlesbrough within the next 48 hours after deciding that they want to appoint Edwards as Pereira's successor, according to Romano, while fellow contender Erik ten Hag has made it clear that he is not interested in taking the job following talks. Speaking on the latest episode of our Market Madness podcast, the respected journalist said:
"Middlesbrough don't want him to go, obviously, so they are trying to protect themselves and stop these conversations with Wolves. But they are still pushing and still trying, so let's see what is going to happen there.
"Rob Edwards remains the leading candidate. There were some conversations with Erik ten Hag's agents earlier this week, but nothing more. Ten Hag is not convinced about the opportunity.
"I think there are going to be more conversations in the next 24-48 hours. Soon we will have a final answer but, for sure, Edwards is the leading candidate. At the moment, Middlesbrough are still trying to block this opportunity."
It was confirmed on Friday morning that Middlesbrough had cancelled Edwards' planned press conference, which was initially scheduled for 1pm, leading to there being further speculation that he is preparing to walk away from the Riverside Stadium in favour of the vacant managerial position at Wolves.
The Championship side rejected an approach from Molineux on Thursday, when Wanderers were seeking permission to enter discussions with the 42-year-old, resulting in chairman Jeff Shi and other influential figures behind the scenes having to return to the drawing board.
GMS sources recently confirmed that Edwards was one of the candidates to take over from Pereira at Molineux, with the Middlesbrough manager having a release clause written into his contract.
The West Midlands outfit turned their attention towards the former Luton Town chief after Gary O'Neil pulled out of the running to return to Wanderers earlier this week, following a period of reflection.
